Police said the shooter had been stabbed.

YONKERS, NY – A 16-year-old is accused of shooting two people, killing one, during a fight between two groups of teenagers. He himself sustained stab wounds during the melee, police said.

The altercation broke out before 3 p.m. Tuesday. Members of the Yonkers Police Department responded to the area of South Broadway at Vark Street on reports of shots fired; at the same time, two teens with gunshot injuries arrived at Saint Joseph’s Hospital.

One of the victims, a 17-year-old resident of Yonkers, died from his injuries.

Officers cordoned off the area and initiated a criminal investigation. Detectives from the Major Case Squad and Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene, interviewing subjects and witnesses, reviewing surveillance video, and processing forensic and ballistic evidence.

Investigators have concluded that two groups of teenagers known to each other were engaged in a dispute that escalated into a fight and physical violence in the area of 44 Vark Street. During the fight, one boy allegedly displayed a handgun and fired several shots in the direction of the opposing teenagers, striking two of them.

The dead teen, Kasean Tuthill of Gaffney Place, was struck twice in the back. The second victim, an 18-year-old, was struck twice in his hip and lower extremities and is currently in stable condition at a local hospital, police said.

Investigators working throughout the night developed information to identify the perpetrator and establish probable cause to charge him with the crime of murder. He was apprehended Wednesday morning. He is identified as Gavin Chisholm, a resident of Sunnyside Drive. During the incident, Chisolm suffered apparent stab wounds to his thigh.

Chisolm is being arraigned as an Adolescent Offender in the Youth Part of the Westchester County Court; he is being charged with one count of Murder 2, a Class A-1 Felony, and one count of Attempted Murder 2, a Class B Violent Felony, in the New York State Penal Law.

“Violent acts, even those committed by young adults, will not be tolerated in our City; gun violence has no place in our communities," Police Commissioner Charles Gardner said in a press release, "and let this swift arrest be a stark reminder to our young people that their actions may have life-altering consequences – in this case, two lives and two families have been left devastated.”

The case is being prosecuted by the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office.

The investigation is ongoing. Due to the ages of those involved, no additional information will be released, police said.

The City of Yonkers and Yonkers Police Department offers its condolences to the family of the victim.
