NEW YORK CITY — Thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds predicted to hit New York City caused the National Weather Service to issue a hazardous weather outlook for Tuesday afternoon.

The five boroughs and northeast New Jersey could be slammed with a severe storm that will last from early afternoon into the late evening, according to the NWS alert posted at 5:10 a.m. Tuesday.

"The exact timing, duration, and areal extent of the heaviest rain are still uncertain," forecasters wrote, "but as these factors come more into focus, short-fused flash flood watches could be issued for parts of the area."

NWS forecasters predicted Monday night that New York will get an inch of rain during scattered showers all day Tuesday.

The storm forecast comes amid what NWS predicts will be a dark and dank week in New York City, but, according to the hazardous weather outlook, there is low probability that the hazardous weather will continue past Tuesday.
