Did you know an estimated 1 in 10 people has fallen victim to Home Improvement Contracting Scams?
Unfortunately, a Rockland County family recently became one of the latest victims, scammed out of $90,000 by a crooked contractor that promised to renovate their yard while they were away on vacation but never did! They’re not alone. So far this year, Rockland County families have been scammed out of over $200,000.
These individuals can often be hard to catch, and the money stolen harder to reclaim, which is why I stress to our families that prevention is key!

My administration’s Office of Consumer Protection urges families to always:
- Steer clear of unsolicited contractors
- Get a written contract
- Never pay until job is complete
- Utilize a licensed contractor
Once you decide on a contractor, keep in mind that every home improvement project over $250 requires a written contract. In addition, any down payment shall not exceed $1,000 or 15% of the contract price, whichever is less. Any exceptions to this must be stated within the written contract and agreed upon.

If a conflict arises between the consumer and business, our Office of Consumer Protection can assist with the dispute and mediation process.
Complaints regarding terrible workmanship from unlicensed vendors or an unlicensed vendor scamming a consumer out of money for an uncompleted job can also be investigated by Consumer Protection resulting in bringing the responsible party to Criminal Court in addition to impounding vehicles in these scenarios thanks to a Rockland County Local Law I sponsored during my time as a Rockland County Legislator.
Just last year the Rockland County Office of Consumer Protection investigated 617 complaints and returned $66,000 to homeowners.
I urge our families to always remain vigilant when it comes to scammers and feel free to contact our Office of Consumer Protection with any concerns as they are here for your protection and will be a strong advocate for you.
