Hudson Valley Hospitals Rated on Safety

New rankings have been issued for hospitals around the country and overall New York hospitals collectively rank near the bottom.

The Hospital Safety Score, which is a public service provided by The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization “committed to driving quality, safety, and transparency in the U.S. health system,” has handed out its latest hospital safety grades for the spring of 2016.

The Hospital Safety Score examines how well each hospital does at keeping their patients safe from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections. Information is compiled from surveys, public data and information from the Center for Disease Control.

They assigned scores to more than 2,500 hospitals nationwide, including 143 hospitals in New York.

The nation's top hospitals, according to the Hospital Safety Score, are found in Vermont (No. 1), Maine (No. 2) , Rhode Island (No. 3), Massachusetts (No. 4), and Minnesota (No. 5).

New York was ranked No. 44 in the country, as 'A' grades were handed out to just 9.8 percent.

In the Hudson Valley, 'A's were handed out to just one:

HospitalSafety.org says it sometimes does not have enough information to issue a fair Safety Score for every hospital. Additionally, many hospitals are not able to provide data to the federal government because they are too small, or for other reasons. Military and veterans' hospitals are not issued a Hospital Safety Score due to lack of available data. Leapfrog experts are studying ways to score them in the future.
