Hudson Valley Long-Range Weather Forecast: Winter Makes Final Push

The groundhog saw his shadow, so let's look at the next six weeks, out to when the lion comes in. VIDEO

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning, which scientifically means one thing and one thing only: Six more weeks of winter.

"We’ll surely have 6 more weeks of winter, whether Phil sees his shadow or not… since there’s plenty of cold air left in the long range pattern," said Bill Potter of Hudson Valley Weather.

So let's look at February, when winter usually makes its last big push, and the beginning of March, which comes in like a different animal altogether.

It doesn't look like extreme winter weather is in the cards this month. We've got a wave of cold air coming in over the weekend, with maybe a dusting of snow. No big Super Bowl snowstorm, though. There's a possible snow storm a week away, which might be mixed with rain.

Here's how AccuWeather sees the next six weeks locally (gotta love the forecast for March 16, predicting 52 degrees and snow):

"But there is a lot of volatility in the long range data beyond 5 days, so much could still change," Potter said. "For now… let's all kick back and watch the furry fiend do his dirty work on Tuesday. The way things have gone this winter, he may be more accurate than the long range models."

Spring will officially begin on March 20.

"As far as a significant warmup goes across the Northeast, I think you have to hold off til late April or early May," AccuWeather Meteorologist Paul Pastelok said.
