Moms Talk: Rockland Has Lots of Children’s Summer Programs

Plenty of options for kids to have fun locally.

Each summer brings us up to 10 weeks to fill. Many families in Clarkstown like to send their children to a structured summer program. This gives the kids something to do and the parents a safe place for their children.

When I was growing up in New City, my parents sent me to Four Petals Day Camp (now defunct), Deerkill Day Camp and then Ramaquois before I set off for sleepaway camp. I still have good memories of those summers and can even sing some of the camp songs.

My kids’ experiences have run the gamut. When they were younger, they went to the full day camps like Candy Mountain (now Woodmont) and Deer Mountain. When Josh started playing for the Clarkstown Stars, we felt that a full day would be too much and decided to send him to the half-day playground camp run by the Town of Clarkstown. More recent summers brought my boys to the week-long specialty sports camps that are offered throughout the county. It’s amazing how many different types of camp opportunities exist in Rockland County.

The Town of Clarkstown and the Clarkstown Community Learning Center (CLC) have many affordable and interesting programs. There is a Summer Camp Fair for the CLC camps on Thursday, May 12th from 5:30-7:30pm at Chestnut Grove. Registration discounts for the camps will be given that night and many of the programs’ teachers will be there to answer questions.

The Patch Moms Council and I have assembled a list of local camps. It is not complete—there are many, many wonderful camps out there—but certainly a good starting point for anyone searching for something for their kids to do this summer.

Enjoy!
