Save Money & Save Our Environment

By County Executive Ed Day

With spring in the air and summer on the horizon we thought residents would benefit from learning more about ways to save money & our environment by making a few changes around their home.

Did you know that the United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates nearly $350 in water costs can be saved annually by switching to WaterSense labeled water-using appliances and fixtures?

The upgrades across a wide range of appliances including toilets, showerheads, faucets, irrigation controllers, and more can all lead to potential savings for families. In fact, the WaterSense website lookforwatersense.epa.gov/products/ lists appliances, exact water usage, and potential savings if you upgrade.

Veolia, the largest water provider in Rockland County, also offers rebates to support the costs incurred by making the switch. For more information regarding their rebate program, visit Veolia’s website conserverebates.veolia.us.

In addition to upgrading water appliances and fixtures, a few behavior changes surrounding both indoor and outdoor usage could lead to great water savings. Below are some great ways to promote water conservation:

  • Check your home for leaks every month and fix as soon as possible
  • Turn off your faucet when brushing your teeth
  • Only run the dishwasher or clothes washer when you have a full load
  • Collect rainwater with a barrel to reuse for watering your garden or washing your car
  • Consider planting native plants that are drought resistant
  • Only water your landscape twice a week before 9 AM and after 5 PM to reduce evapotranspiration

But conserving water doesn’t just have economic benefits; it’s an environmental imperative with far-reaching benefits.

Learning to use water sustainably can help to ensure we maintain access to clean, safe drinking water for decades to come and why water conservation will always be a vital component to every community. We encourage our residents to explore ways to conserve at a benefit to their wallet and their community.
