Kenneth Solosky was a lieutenant in the New York City Police Department on Sept. 11, 2001, serving as the chief pilot in the aviation unit that flew helicopters for the NYPD.
“It was one of the craziest days of my life,” Mr. Solosky, now the director of security at Lenox Hill Hospital, says, recalling the confusion and pandemonium of the day two hijacked planes flew into the World Trade Center. “It was a life-changing event for everyone involved.”
One thing that has changed since that day is the organization’s awareness and preparedness for other potential future events. Many of the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s security department officials are former NYPD or other police personnel and bring that experience to the table.

“We have an extraordinary working relationship with not only the NYPD but also law enforcement on Long Island as well,” Mr. Solosky says. “I know personally in my current job as director of security at Lenox Hill Hospital, I talk with the NYPD on a weekly basis on a myriad of issues but every week we discuss the possibility of any threats and any chatter.”
