Assault Rifles Found Inside NHP Home After Tenant Leaves Country: Police

BREAKING: The tenant, Chandrakant Dhanak, was arrested in April after several assault weapons were found inside his home, police say.

The landlord of a New Hyde Park residence discovered assault rifles, ammunition and more Tuesday while cleaning the home after learning his tenant was out of the country, police say.

According to authorities, the landlord, who does not live at the North 6th Street home, was informed that his tenant, Chandrakant Dhanak, would not be returning to the United States.

The landlord discovered suspicious items while cleaning up the home and notified authorities, police say.

The Nassau County Arson Bomb Squad responded to the home and recovered four assault rifles, ammunition and black powder, police say.

The investigation is ongoing.

Dhanak was arrested in April after authorities received an anonymous tip that he was in possession of several firearms and ammunition. During the search, detectives found nine assault weapons inside his residence, which is a direct violation of the Safe Act, police say. Detectives also recovered 23 rifles and five handguns, which were all legally possessed by Dhanak, police say.
