We usually use premixed packaged soil when gardening in small spaces like a balcony or a windowsill. The soil is already PH balanced, but when we use non-packaged dirt, it helps to check the PH balance. I found a good article on how to check it yourself. Here it is:http://bit.ly/14yVIDm
