You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, New Rochelle Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out.

Many of us who live in New Rochelle might be familiar with the more than 80-year old structure that sits on Palmer Avenue in Mamaroneck with its copper roof that has since been oxidized green and the juicy hot-dog aroma that emanates from the Chinese pagoda.
If you have never been however, you may be missing out on a piece of culinary history as Walter's Hot Dogs serves up a split dog, grilled in "secret sauce" and served on a toasted bun with homemade mustard.

Since 1919, these hot dogs have been a neighborhood favorite, and having won many prestigious awards for the quality of their hotdogs, the restaurant was even listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.
Many generations have come to know and love the hot-dog stand, which has been made famous for their $2 mixture of beef, pork and veal hot dogs, plus there are other goodies such as fries and tasty desserts.
The rave reviews for Walter's Hot Dogs are seemingly endless but here are just a few from yelp.com.
"There is a reason why this place was voted Best Hot Dog Venue In Westchester! The Hot Dogs are to die for, grilled to perfection and the added *****Dijon mustard and ketchup is icing on the cake! The fries are just as amazing, shoestring are the best choice! Sure beats Nathans thats for sure!"
Another customer said that, "the grilled dog (best served as a Double!) is rich and smoky and buttery. It tastes more like a Bavarian wurst than a regular hot dog."
"It has that satisfying SNAP! that all fresh hot dogs should and their fries are quite good as well! While Papaya King is my all time favorite, Walter's is a dog I will travel for," he continued.
Two things to watch out for when visiting Walter's is that the lines can be long, especially during the peak lunch and dinner hours and also Walter's Hot Dogs only excepts cash so leave the plastic at home.
Their hours are Monday thru Saturday, 11:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. and Sundays, 11:45 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. and are located at 937 Palmer Ave in Mamaroneck.
