Demolition Agreement Approved to Tear Down New Rochelle Rowing Club

The historic building was seriously damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

The end is near for the dilapidated New Rochelle Rowing Club building.

Tuesday night, the City Council unanimously approved a contract with Capital Industries Corp. of Yonkers to raze the 100-year-plus structure. The building had fallen into disrepair over the years, particularly following Hurricane Sandy a couple of years ago.

Exactly when the building will come down has not been decided, but it could be some time in the next several days or weeks.

“It’s been getting worse by the day,” New Rochelle City Manager Chuck Strome told The Journal News.

Some rowing club members believe the building could be saved, but that the city wants to tear it down to eventually develop the city-owned property it rests on, which overlooks Long Island Sound.
