New Rochelle Teen Pleads In Death Of Schoolmate

She was part of a gang that stalked and assaulted the girl, stabbing her when she tried to retrieve her housekeys.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The 18-year-old who fatally stabbed a 16-year-old New Rochelle High School student has pleaded guilty to first degree manslaughter. Z’Inah Brown will be sentenced in August.

Valaree Schwab was stalked by a group of New Rochelle teenagers on Jan. 10, 2018. All were students at NRHS.

The gang, including Brown, assaulted Schwab on North Avenue, who was not only injured but dropped her house keys. One of the teens picked them up.

Schwab followed the group to the North Avenue Dunkin’ Donuts to try to get back her keys, Inside the store, Brown stabbed Schwab who was pronounced dead later that day at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx.

Brown, then 17, was originally charged with second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter, felonies, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor.

Two of the others involved in the attack, Dominique Slack and Carl Booker, both pleaded guilty to Stalking in the First Degree, a class D violent felony, for being part of the gang who assaulted Schwab on that day.

Slack was sentenced in February, to “shock probation” where she will be incarcerated in Westchester County Jail for six months and serve a total of five years’ probation. In March, Booker received the same sentence.

Assistant District Attorney Laura Murphy, Chief of the Career Criminal Bureau, and Assistant District Attorney Nicholas DiCostanzo, both of the Superior Court Trial Division are prosecuted the cases.
