Jaime Werthner, the daughter of one of the victims of a fire that destroyed a Greenport home last month, recently started a GoFundMe page to help raise money to allow them to rebuild their life.

Margaret (Peggy) Richards, 60, along with her partner Ken Macalpin, 51, and a third resident lost their home and all of their belongings in the fire.

All three occupants of the home escaped uninjured, and according to the GoFundMe page, Richards miraculously escaped with the nightgown she was wearing.

Richards and Macalpin are currently staying at a Southold church while they wait for their house to be rebuilt, according to the page.

However, soon they will need to find an apartment to rent. Macalpin is currently suffering from colon cancer, so the couple needs to stay in the Greenport/Southold area to be close to his doctors, according to the page.

Due to previous financial challenges, the couple were behind on their mortgage.

“Money has always been tight, but having to make mortgage AND rent payments will create increasing challenges for my mom and Ken as they try to rebuild their home and deal with medical issues,” Werthner writes on the page.

The basic insurance on the home doesn’t cover anything more than the home being rebuilt.

The donations from the page will go towards helping towards securing an apartment and replacing all of the personal items they have lost.

The goal on the page is to raise a total of $10,000 and since the page was created on Feb. 21, $1,875 has been raised.
