Man's Body Found On Shelter Island: Police

The man is believed to have drowned, police said.

SHELTER ISLAND, NY — The body of a man believed to have drowned was found on Shelter Island Tuesday, police said.

The report of a dead man, found on the beach on the south side of Mashomack Preserve in the Smith Cove waterway of Shelter Island Sound, came in around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, Shelter Island Police said.

The man is believed to have drowned, police said. Southampton Town Police detectives were notified due to a possible connection with a missing person investigation in their jurisdiction.

A kayaker from Queens has been missing from Sag Harbor Bay since October, but as of this week had not yet been located.

The Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office responded and removed the body for investigation, identification, and cause of death, police said.
