Cow Harbor CrossFit Opens in East Northport
New gym features short, intense, constantly varied workouts.
Cow Harbor CrossFit quietly opened its doors along Railroad Avenue earlier this month after Northporter Bobby Meuser and his three friends recognized a niche for the unique strength and conditioning program of constantly varied, high intensity, and functional movement that is quickly becoming a national phenomenon.
"CrossFit is the sport of fitness- you can use it to get in shape, or you can use it to train for a specific sport like lacrosse, rugby, soccer, or wrestling. We pride ourselves on general fitness and being ready for anything by keeping it varied," said Meuser, who added that the small class sizes have allowed the gym to become a supportive community for all levels. "Here everyone hangs out after class, gets to know each other, and helps each other get through the work outs."
Workouts are short-- no more than one hour-- and incredibly intense. Different sections of the airy, mirrorless gym are home to rowing machines, free weights, barbells, pullup stations, gymnastics rings, and jump boxes which are each incorporated into a constantly changing regimen.

Participants in the beginners class on Monday night strained to finish the intense workouts, the camaraderie plainly evident as they pushed through a difficult circuit. "We had the row, 1000 meters on the rowing machine, squats, pullups, pushups, and situps, twice. Then we worked with them on a specific skill: the press, the push press, the front squat, and squat thrusts. That worked them into the work out, which was tonight they had to do 21 thrusters and 21 pull ups and 15, 15, 9, 9 and they were done," explained Meuser.
Each beginners or "Foundations" class starts with a mini nutrition lecture and works through to advanced classes. "The foundation of CrossFit is really based on nutrition, you have to eat well if you want to perform well."
