Dickinson Avenue Students Tap into the Art of Maple Sugaring

The third graders recently put their new knowledge of maple sugaring to the test.

Third graders at Dickinson Avenue Elementary School in East Northport recently learned all about maple sugaring.

Karen Hoenscheid, a Dickinson mom, taught students how the Iroquois discovered maple syrup and how they turned sap into syrup the old-fashioned way. Students learned how the syrup helped Native Americans and early settlers survive harsh winters.

The students then put their new knowledge of maple sugaring to the test by using clues to identify maple trees. The students watched their teacher use a power drill on the tree and saw the process of the sap seeping through the spile and into the bucket.
