'I Did the Grid' Road Race to Honor Fallen East Northport Marine

The eighth annual Cpl. Christopher G. Scherer "I Did the Grid" road race will provide troop support, sponsorships for service dogs and more.

An upcoming race in East Northport will honor the memory of a local Corporal in the Marine Corps who lost his life while serving his country.

Christopher Scherer lost his life while serving in Iraq on July 21, 2007. “On this morning of the race we ask you to promise not to forget, nor let your children or their children forget that Chris and his fellow warriors died so that we might live free,” The Cpl. Christopher G. Scherer Semper Fi Fund said.

Proceeds from this event will provide troop support, sponsorships for service dogs, scholarships and warrior wishes.

Born and raised in East Northport, Scherer would often refer to his neighborhood as “The Grid.”

On Saturday, May 23, members of the community will race through “The Grid” in memory of Scherer.

Trek through the four miles of “The Grid” by running, jogging or walking. The race starts and finishes at Pulaski Road School. Register for the race here.

Here are the race options:

4 Mile Competitive Run

  • Race begins at 8 a.m.
  • Participants should be able to run a mile in under 12 minutes
  • Entry: $30 (T-shirt included)

1 Mile Fun Run

  • Race begins at 9 a.m.
  • Runners of all abilities are welcome
  • Entry:
    • Under 12: $5 (no T-shirt), $15 (T-shirt included)
    • 12 & Over: $10 (no T-shirt), $20 (T-shirt included)

4 Mile Recreational Run/ Walk

  • Race begins at 9:30 a.m.
  • Runners of all abilities are welcome
  • Entry: $30 (T-shirt included)

This race has no awards. Instead, runners will have the names of a fallen military member, from Operating Enduring Freedom or from Operation Iraqi Freedom, printed on their bibs.

Each participant will carry that name and upon completion of the course, will ring a bell to signify that the Airman, Coast Guardsman, Sailor, Soldier, or Marine named on the bib will be remembered for making the ultimate sacrifice.
