Police: Bridgehampton Man Hospitalized After Accidentally Setting Car on Fire Trying to Kill Bedbugs

The man escaped from the car but was hospitalized for first and second degree burns.

A Bridgehampton man was hospitalized after soaking his car with rubbing alcohol to try to get rid of bedbugs and then lighting a cigarette inside the car, setting the car on fire in a parking lot in Eastport on Tuesday evening, according to Suffolk Police.

Scott Kemery, 44, told police he had bedbugs in the car, and someone told him that he could kill the bugs with alcohol, according to police.

He bought rubbing alcohol and poured it in the car then and he sat in his car and lit a cigarette in the parking lot of King Kullen Shopping Center located at 25 Eastport-Manor Road shortly after 5 p.m.

The car caught on fire, along with two other cars.

Kemery was able to escape his burning car on his own and was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with first- and second-degree burns, police said.

No other injuries were reported.

The car was a rental car from Florida but the vehicle was so burned that the license plates are gone, according to police.

Arson Squad detectives are investigating the incident.
