NYACK, NY — The first transition of traffic to the Gov. Mario Cuomo Bridge from the Tappan Zee Bridge is scheduled to occur next week.

Overnight Aug. 25, four northbound/westbound lanes of the New York State Thruway will gradually be shifted starting late Friday evening into early Saturday morning to travel across the newly completed span of the Mario Cuomo Bridge. The new configuration will have four lanes of I-87 traffic on the new span, while four lanes will be open for southbound/eastbound traffic on the old bridge.

Later this fall, an additional traffic shift will bring all eight lanes of traffic to the first new span, with a concrete barrier separating each direction. That traffic pattern will remain in effect until the second span is completed in 2018.

The new bridge, on track to stay on budget at $3.98 billion, is one of the biggest active bridge projects in the nation and the largest in the history of the New York State Thruway Authority.
