Curiosity Got The Better Of Girls On A Class Trip, But Then Things Went Wrong Under The Streets Of Nyack

The lost 8th and 9th graders who decided to explore an underground creek are all safe now, with only a few cuts and scrapes reported.

NYACK, NY — A class trip turned into a tense scene as an escapade during a class trip to a park moved underground — and then things got a little hairy.

Nyack Mayor Joe Rand, who described the school trip that went wrong as an "adventure" in downtown Nyack, thanked first responders who "did a great job responding to a potentially dangerous situation."

In an update, the mayor said a group of 8th and 9th graders from a private school in Ramapo came to Memorial Park on a field trip. The group of girls got curious about the Nyack Creek culvert in the park and decided to go exploring.

The bold explorers went underground along the creek up through Nyack, some of them getting as far as Franklin and Main, others scattered along the way, according to the mayor. Unfortunately, at some point, the girls got lost and they tried to get out.

People on the streets of Nyack heard them and called 911, and first responders soon located all the girls at locations below the village. There were no serious injuries, with only a few cuts and scrapes reported.

"Technically, none of the girls were 'rescued,' because they all came out in their own power, but everyone's lucky that the authorities responded and figured out where all the girls were as quickly as they did," the mayor said.

There were about 70 girls on the trip, all of them eventually accounted for before they boarded buses back to the safety of school.

"I just want to say how grateful I am to the Orangetown Police Department, Nyack Fire Department, the Nyack Community Ambulance Corps, Chaverim of Rockland, and Rockland Hatzalah, thank them for their fast action and for working together so well," Mayor Rand said, "And I also want to say how happy I am that no one was hurt. And just to remind everyone: please don't go into the culvert at Memorial Park. "
