
NAMI Basics is a FREE six week class for parents of children & adolescents with mental, emotional and/or behavioral challenges and is a program of NAMI-FAMILYA of Rockland County, Inc. (affiliated with the National Alliance on Mental Illness and NAMI-NYS). The class is taught by trained parents who have lived similar experiences with their own children. Course elements include:
- The trauma of emotional disorders for the child and family
- The biology of mental/emotional disorders: getting an accurate diagnosis
- The latest research on the medical aspects of the illness & advances in treatment
- An overview of treatment options
- The impact of a child's illness on the rest of the family-caregivers and siblings
- An overview of the systems involved in caring for the children and teens
