New York Ranked 2nd Worst State to Retire To

New York has a lot—of things people planning to retire don’t want.

Bankrate’s “Best and Worst States to Retire” list ranks all 50 states according to their cost of living; crime rate (violent and property crimes); health care quality, state and local tax burden; personal well-being for seniors; and weather (temperature, percentage of sunshine, humidity).

“Our latest retirement survey found that 60 percent of you want to move when you hit retirement. This ranking is primarily for you,” the writers said.

New York came in 49th. Of all the states, only Arkansas did worse in the rankings.

The Empire State was dead last in Tax Rate and 47th in Cost of Living. We struggled also in Community Wellbeing (No. 42).

We are right in the middle for Weather and for Health Care Quality—we ranked No. 26 in the latter and 25 in the former.

Our best score was for Crime Rate, where we logged in at 17th.

The states down at the bottom with us? In descending order: Oregon, Missouri, Kentucky, Hawaii, New Jersey, Louisiana, West Virginia, Alaska, New York, Arkansas.

Our neighbor to the east? Ranked 39.
