Record-Setting Swimming at Tappan Zee

This week's Whiz Kid has a way in water

  • Name: Stanley Wong
  • School: Tappan Zee
  • Year: Senior
  • Sport: Swimming
  • Specialty: Sprint freestyle and breaststroke
  • Club team: New York Sharks
  • Coaches: Todd Langenmayr, John Alaimo
  • Recent competition: National Club Swimming Association Junior National Championships, at the Orlando (FL) YMCA Aquatic Center

Accomplishment: Wong won the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.29, the fastest finish-time for 17-years-olds in the United States

Quotable: “Since the race [50 free] is so unpredictable, I just try to have a perfect race, and hope for the best,” Wong said following his triumph. “I try not to think negative, and just be optimistic about everything.”

Coach Alaimo: “He’s one of the greatest kids that I know. I have known him since he was 10 years old, and he has always done the right thing by others, and is a phenomenal competitor. He has the heart, mind, and the making of a true elite sprinter.”

Next competition: Wong, a member of the Sharks organization for eight years, will be participating in a number of sanctioned meets during the summer season before heading to Stanford (CA) University in August for the National Junior Outdoor Championships.

History: Coached primarily by Langenmayr, the Columbia-bound Wong achieved a historic victory for the Sharks in becoming their first Junior National champion. Wong also helped lead Tappan Zee to back-to-back Section 1 championships with wins in three events (two individual, one relay) at this year’s competition.
