Rockland Commuters Need the Coast Guard, Officials Say

"We simply cannot allow the weather to chill the growth in ferry ridership and freeze economic growth in our towns and villages."

Hudson River ice has led to a suspension in ferry service linking Rockland and Westchester counties for the past 17 days.

So today Rockland‬ County Executive Ed Day joined U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, state Senator David Carlucci and state Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski in Haverstraw to call on the U.S. Coast Guard to increase ice-breaking efforts on the river—to keep the Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry operational during prolonged periods of sub-freezing winter weather.

“For Rockland County commuters who depend on the Haverstraw-Ossining ferry, the fickleness of Mother Nature this winter has made it difficult to schedule a workday,” Day said. “Driving a car to a bus to a Metro-North train is far too disruptive for any longer than a few days. I join with Senator Schumer in calling on the United States Coast Guard to keep this region free from dangerous ice.
