Unpleasant Princess Puppet Draws Ire

ArtsRock's third annual Puppet Festival at the Nyack Center turned out more controversial than expected.

The portrayal of a princess in a puppet show called ”The Magic Orange” drew offended feedback from some parents after a performance Sunday in Nyack, according to The Journal News.

The event was ArtsRock’s third annual Puppet Festival.

In advance, ArtsRock had called ”The Magic Orange” a fractured fairy tale. The story line is classic, with a a pretty classic twist. It concerns a farm boy who searches for a magic orange to win half the kingdom and the hand of the princess, only to be burdened with demands from the king and then to find out the princess isn’t as beautiful as she was described.

Some patrons said the negative emphasis on the princess’s appearance was gender stereotyping, TJN reported.

ArtsRock apologized.

The puppeteer, Rick Lyon -- who designed and built the puppets for ”Avenue Q” and was part of the original Broadway cast -- told the paper that anyone who was outraged by the show “completely missed the point,” and that they were “people from a wealthy community who have entitlement up the wing-wang.”
