Event Promoting Independence for the Visually Impaired to be Held in Nyack Oct. 15

The event is co-sponsored by several groups.

The Association for the Visually Impaired, Rockland Independent Living Center, Lions Club District #20 R-1 and NY State Commission for the Blind will celebrate White Cane Day Oct. 15 with a special event to help bring awareness to the public about how the white cane is an important tool in helping blind and visually impaired people live with greater independence.

  • Assistive technology demonstration

The mission of the New City-based Rockland Independent Living Center is to provide advocacy and leadership in the creation and development of an accessible and integrated community for people with disabilities, so that they may pursue lifestyles of their choice.

The mission of the Spring Valley-based Association for the Visually Impaired is to enable persons of all ages who are visually impaired, blind or deaf-blind living throughout Rockland and Orange Counties to lead as independent a life as possible by providing rehabilitation and counseling services in their homes and communities.

Lions Club District #20 R-1 serves Rockland, Putnam and northern Westchester counties.
