Assemblywoman Galef Hosts Event Celebrating 100 Years of Suffrage

Assemblywoman Galef Invites Public to Community Reading of the Declaration of Sentiments to Celebrate 100 Years of Women's Suffrage

(October 10, 2019) -- New York State Assemblywoman Sandy Galef will be hosting a reading of the Declaration of Sentiments on Saturday, October 19th at 1:00 pm outside of the Ossining Historical Society. Rain date for the event is Sunday, October 20th at 1:00 pm. The event is free; you do not need to RSVP. Bring lawn chairs, as outdoor seating is limited. The event will conclude with light refreshments provided by the Ossining Historical Society.

The event will begin with a history of the suffrage movement in the United States by Ossining Historian Dana White. The Assemblywoman will then lead a reading of the Declaration of Sentiments, along with featured women from the community. This powerful document written in 1848 demanded equal rights and treatment for women, and marked the beginning of a nationwide suffrage movement.

“The fight for gender equality has a long and rich history, and it is important to pay tribute to those who have fought for the rights we may take for granted today,” said Galef. “It is also essential that women continue to exercise their right to vote in every election, including the one coming up on November 5th.”
