Tune for the Blood Documentary Screening & Discussion at Down to Earth Markets
Thursday, Feb.18th at 6:30 pm - Come One, Come All! FREE.
The average age of a farmer in the United Kingdom is 58 years old. As in the U.S., traditional family farms are increasingly under threat. The film, Tune for the Blood, follows eight young people in rural Herefordshire over the course of a year, as they step up to manage the family farm. They begin to experience the challenges of farming first-hand and work to keep their communities alive in the modern world. Through it all, their strong respect for tradition and deep connection to the land shines. Tune for the Blood celebrates this connection.
Following the film, we’ll host a group discussion to relate the film’s message to our collective experience here. We’re excited to welcome two locals to add their perspective from the farm:
- Chris O’Blenness - Livestock Manager, Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture - Born and raised in the Rocky Mountains of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Chris came to New York to raise livestock with and for some of the best chefs and farmers in the world. With a long history in sustainable farming, and as the former owner of the first farm-to-table restaurant in Wyoming, Chris brings a unique and honest viewpoint to the current food discussion.
- Marty Kiernan - Owner, Kiernan Farm - While it hasn’t always been called Kiernan Farm, the 140-acres of pasture where Marty and Thelma Kiernan raise their cows has been in continuous agricultural production since 1682. They raised racehorses before they decided to convert their land into a beef farm over a decade ago. The Kiernans raise mostly Angus-Hereford crosses on 100% grass and never use hormones or antibiotics.
We so look forward to this film and discussion on Thursday, Feb. 18th as part of the Grow Local Film Series!
