Indictment in February Van Cortlandt Avenue Shooting
The victim suffered from multiple gunshot wounds and is still in serious condition.

OSSINING, NY — An indictment has been handed down in the Van Cortlandt Avenue shooting Feb. 10. The accused shooter and the victim had known each other for years, Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. announced Monday.
Mario Mieles of Ossining was arraigned on an indictment on charges of attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon in the shooting of another man in Ossining in February. Westchester County Court Judge Anne Minihan presided.
The 31-year-old was indicted by a Westchester County Grand Jury on the following charges:

- Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, a class B violent felony
- Assault in the First Degree, a class B violent felony
- Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a class C felony
Mieles is due back in court on April 17.
At 4:45 a.m. Feb. 10, on Van Cortlandt Avenue in the Village of Ossining, prosecutors allege Mieles shot a man with a semi-automatic pistol several times before running away. The victim suffered from multiple gunshot wounds and is still in serious condition, prosecutors said.

Speculation in Ossining right afterward centered around whether the two were teens and if the shooting was gang-related. Neither was true, police said during the investigation.
In fact, Scarpino said, the victim and the defendant had known each other for years.
Mieles surrendered to police on Feb. 14.
Assistant District Attorney Lana Hochheiser, Deputy Chief of the Homicide Bureau, is prosecuting the case.
A charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
