NY Doubles Down on Indian Point Opposition

Evacuation issues are a main reason Operations joins the NY Department of State in objecting to relicensing the nuclear power plant.

Director of State Operations Jim Malatras sent a letter to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission regarding its Atomic Safety and Licensing Board hearing on the application of Entergy Nuclear Operations Inc. to relicense Indian Point.

This is the second letter sent by state officials -- who also plan to testify at the hearing, now underway in Tarrytown.

The letter lists the state’s objections to having Indian Point operate for another 20 years. Malatras detailed three primary issues:

First, the plant and its component parts are aging.

Second, the reactors are located in a heavily populated area.

Third, the evacuation and safety plans are inadequate. With more than 20 million people within 50 miles of Indian Point, it’s impossible to have effective plans, state officials argue.
