The district's ACTION committee worked with local businesses to create seven lending libraries.

The Ossining School District’s ACTION committee, which strives to meet the needs of local children and families and promote literacy, wants members of the community to take advantage of its seven lending libraries at businesses and restaurants.

ACTION – which stands for Acting Conscientiously to Ignite Opportunity Now – has set up libraries at the following locations:

Children are encouraged to read the donated books when they visit these local businesses, and to talk about them with family members.

“Children may choose to take a book home with them. Most importantly, we want children reading and discussing literature,” Superintendent Raymond Sanchez said. “We want to see students turning the pages of books.”

Members of the ACTION committee worked with local businesses to set up the locations and obtained books. Ossining Girl Scout troops help maintain and sort books for the lending libraries. The Ossining Public Library is supporting the initiative and collecting books.

Some of the other work that the ACTION committee does is organize a twice-monthly food pantry during the school year with the Food Bank for Westchester; hand out winter coats and scarves; and sponsor family game nights and movie nights.

To donate books for the lending libraries, contact James Lucas at 914-941-7700, ext. 1332.
