The incident happened shortly before 11 p.m. The MTA police reported that a vehicle was in the water near the trestle bridge that carries Metro-North trains over the confluence of the Croton and Hudson rivers.
Civilian fishermen had attempted to rescue the driver unsuccessfully, then offered their boat to members of the Croton-on-Hudson Volunteer Fire Department, who were able to get to the car and remove its sole occupant, fire department officials said on Facebook. They initiated CPR about 20-25 minutes into the incident.
Westchester County Aviation and patrol officers, MTA officers and Croton police responded along with multiple fire departments and dive teams. Then the patient was handed off to Croton EMS and an Ossining EMS Paramedic and taken to Northwell Phelps Hospital.
Croton firefighters, members of the Yorktown Fire Department Dive/Water Rescue Team, Croton EMS, Thiells Fire Department Dive Team and Westchester County police remained at the scene until early Wednesday morning to remove the car from the river.
