Col. Josiah Smith DAR Installs new Regent
Regent for Col. Josiah Smith (DAR) installed; speaker Leighton Coleman III, President of The Order of Colonial Lords of Manors in America
On October 10 the Col. Josiah Smith Chapter of the Daughters of the Amercian Revolution (DAR) met at the backyard of Regent Heidi Nathan-Barry. Chaplain Rosalie Shaber officially installed Regent Heidi Nathan-Barry, who took office in June of 2020. The chapter adhered to social distancing and served individually wrapped snacks supplied by member Geri Gendron. Regent Heidi invited all members of the chapter to join virtually if they could not attend in person.
The speaker for this event was Leighton H. Coleman III, President of The Order of Colonial Lords of Manors in America. He delivered an informative presentation on St. George's Manor of Long Island, and explained what defines a Colonial Manor. Mr. Coleman is a direct descendant of a Colonial Lord of a Manor. Manors in New York colony were larger than one would expect, but the owner, known as “Lord of The Manor,” was put in charge of the administration of the civic life of the residents in the land of the manor. Mr. Coleman stated that "It is very important to understand that Manors are land grants with a court system, such as court leet or court baron." The organization’s goal is to educate people about what defines a manor.
Members of DAR are direct descendants of Patriots of the American Revolution. Patriots were not only soldiers. There are women Patriots too as well as Patriots from France and Spain. Today our members serve the community with needed outreach, give out scholarships to High School Seniors, and help our service members and veterans. Do you have a distant grandparent who is supported the American Revolution and helped get our freedom? We welcome new members and will help you join.
