Officers Rescue Man After Kayak Overturns In Great South Bay

The 52-year-old man was paddling in a kayak in the bay when he was thrown overboard by a rogue wave Saturday morning.

PATCHOGUE, NY — Suffolk police rescued a Patchogue man from the Great South Bay after his kayak overturned and sank Saturday morning.

The 52-year-old man was paddling in a 12-foot Pelican kayak with a friend in another kayak in the bay, when he was thrown overboard by a rogue wave, at 7:38 a.m.

He and his friend were unable to remove the water from the boat, and his friend called 911 while the man held onto his friend’s kayak to stay afloat.

Two officers, aboard Marine Gulf, responded and spotted Kennedy’s friend waving his paddle in the air to signal them.

The officers brought the two kayakers aboard Marine Gulf, and returned them to where they launched in the Patchogue River.

Both the man and his friend declined medical treatment.
