MEDFORD, NY — Tanks containing diesel fuel spilled onto the south side of the Long Island Expressway in Medford on Tuesday, causing delays in the area for several hours.

The crash took place at the intersection of Old Medford Road just after 10 a.m. and the "strength of the impact caused both saddle tanks on the big rig to rupture, spilling approximately 80 gallons of diesel across the roadway and adjoining yard," Medford Fire Department officials said in a post to Facebook.

The diesel was cleaned up "swiftly" with help from the Town of Brookhaven Fire Marshal's office, the state Department of Environmental Conservation Spill Response Team and Suffolk police's Emergency Service Unit, the post continued.
