'Pretty Serious Crash' As Vehicle Goes Into Suffolk Apartment: Building Inspector

The crash comes one day after a woman was struck and killed in the parking lot of the same community, Suffolk police said.

PATCHOGUE, NY — A vehicle crashed into a building at the Heatherwood House At Patchogue apartment complex on Wednesday afternoon, a day after a woman was struck and killed in the same parking lot, Suffolk police said.

The vehicle crashed into a building at the complex off of Waverley Avenue just after 1 p.m., according to police.

Patchogue Building Inspector Peter search said that the vehicle crashed "completely" into an apartment but that the driver was able to back out and park the vehicle.

"It was a pretty serious crash," he said.

The building has been evacuated and the complex's owners have applied for an emergency building permit, but they must first have the structure examined by an engineer, Sarich said.

It was not immediately clear if anyone was injured.

Patch has reached out to the apartment building's management for comment.

The crash comes a day after a 73-year-old Patchogue woman died after she was struck by an SUV by a 30-year-old Patchogue woman driving a 2010 Kia Sportage, police said. The SUV struck Ida Papik just before 7 a.m., and she was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later, according to police.

The SUV’s driver was uninjured.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check.
