Standoff In Cortlandt Ends With 2 Officers Shot, Barricaded Man Dead

New York State police said crisis negotiators tried for nearly 12 hours to convince the Croton-on-Hudson man to surrender.

CORTLANDT, NY — A Croton-on-Hudson man is dead after a violent 12-hour standoff with police.

At 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, New York State police were called to a report of an armed man barricaded in a home on Quaker Bridge Road.

State police and the Westchester County Police Department established a safe perimeter around the residence. Then crisis negotiators attempted for nearly 12 hours to convince Christopher Pesavento, 50, to peacefully surrender, police said.

During the negotiations, Pesavento fired multiple rounds at police officers from inside, striking two Westchester Police officers. They suffered non-life-threatening wounds. Both officers were treated and released from a local hospital, police said.

Shortly after midnight on Sept. 15, a member of law enforcement was able to determine that Pesavento was dead. The cause of death is pending investigation by the Westchester Medical Examiner’s Office.

No members of law enforcement discharged rounds from their weapons, but less than lethal methods were utilized in an attempt to force a peaceful surrender, police said.

The New York State Attorney General’s Office is investigating as mandated.
