Be Not Forgetful to Entertain Strangers….
For Thereby Some Have Entertained Angels Unawares
When I heard the news of the horrific car accident, it never occurred to me that James McNair the comedian and writer was OUR Jimmy Mack. I went about my business until a few hours later my daughter Julia came running into my room and told me the horrible truth – I was devastated to say the least.
There are so many people that have been touched by Jimmy in this community and knew him in different ways. My time spent with Jimmy was not on a stage, but at the soup kitchen at the Salvation Army. I remember meeting him and being instantly drawn to him. I came in to the Salvation Army to get the emergency services vehicle to serve breakfast and Jimmy was working in the kitchen. Maybe it was his smile, or charm or really cool hair – but I knew instantly I had to know him. The conversation that ensued was awesome. We spoke about the community and ideas to help the needy. There was nary a mention of his amazing career and famous people he knew. His faith in God was wonderful.

As time continued, Jimmy and I ran into each other at charitable functions around town. Every time I saw him I couldn’t help but generate the biggest smile for this man. He was an amazing force and radiated kindness.
The last time I saw Jimmy Mack, he was working on a music video for Music 4 Orphans with Chaka Watch. Hanging out with Jimmy on the set was a great time, and sadly was the last time I saw that amazing smile. The last memory I have of Jimmy was him insisting on driving me to my car after the video shoot so I didn’t have to walk alone at night. We laughed about the fun that was had during the video and the great participation the children had in making the video complete.

Later that day after I was delivered the horrible news of Jimmy’s death, I walked out to my car. A plaque I have hanging on the front of my house immediately came in to focus. I hung this plaque up 18 years ago when we moved in with no one special in mind. It seemed thoughtful and sweet, but not directed to anyone in particular…until June 7th. Be Not Forgetful to Entertain Strangers….For Thereby Some Have Entertained Angels Unawares - Hebrews 13.2. It was a perfect fit and now it made sense.
Thank you Jimmy Mack for your kindness shown not only to me, but to our community. You were sunshine and a gentleman and I am better person for having known you.
