Peekskill Cop Appears In Court Over Sex Assault Charges

PEEKSKILL, NY — Peekskill Police Officer Michael Agovino appeared in Peekskill City Court Tuesday. Agovino, accused by a Peekskill woman of demanding sexual favors while he investigated a larceny case in which she was accused, was arrested Saturday.

He faces charges of Sexual Abuse in the First Degree; Stalking in the First Degree, as a Sexually Motivated Felony; and Burglary in the Second Degree, as a Sexually Motivated Felony. SEE: Peekskill Cop Accused Of Sex Abuse In Larceny Case

Tuesday night, Peekskill Mayor Andre Rainey and Police Chief Donald Halmy gave statements at the City's Committee of the Whole meeting regarding the case. City officials released the statements to the media.

"The entire City of Peekskill organization, including the Common Council, are saddened to learn about the arrest of Police Officer Michael Agovino and the charges alleged against him. The Police Department continues to work diligently to earn the respect and trust of the community," Halmy said in his statement. "Allegations such as these have the tendency to destroy such respect and trust of our officers in blue. Please understand that we are investigating this matter to our fullest ability. We are also cooperating with the District Attorney’s Office on the criminal investigation. We know that we are held to a higher standard, and we will continue to work toward restoring the public’s trust."

Agovino posted bond on $100,000 bail and was released from the Westchester County Jail. He is due to return to City Court on March 12, the mayor said.

"The City is committed to the safety and well-being of our local citizens and will continue to fully cooperate with the District Attorney’s Office in this investigation," Rainey said. "He has been placed on administrative leave with the Peekskill Police Department until further notice. Administrative leave means he is not to report to the police department in any capacity. The purpose of this leave is to allow the police department to investigate the situation before determining an appropriate course of action."
