Don’t let their age fool you, the residents at Drum Hill Senior Living Community love a party just as much as any teenager does. Residents at the home recently had the chance to share their love of music and dancing with members of the Peekskill High School Interact Club, who hosted their Annual “Senior” Prom at Drum Hill.
The Interact Club has been holding the Senior Prom at Drum Hill for over three years and both students and residents of the home feel it is a special way to celebrate the relationships formed between the two groups throughout the year. In addition to the Senior Prom, Interact members visit Drum Hill on a weekly basis to do crafts with residents. The club also hosts a Snowball Dance for seniors in January as well.
“The seniors love their interactions with the students,” said Drum Hill Activities Coordinator Joanne Parte. “The students’ smiles are contagious to our residents.”
At the event, Frank Sanatra songs played and Drum Hill residents shared stories and dance steps with Interact Club members. As with any prom, a King and Queen were named and this year the coveted titles went to PHS student Davonte Woodton and Drum Hill resident Irmgard Schoene. Woodton and Schoene dethroned last year’s reigning King and Queen, Interact member Aaron Cataquet and Drum Hill resident Sophie Failla, who, despite having to turn in their crowns, could be found dancing together once again at this year’s prom.
“Watching the bond and interaction between our students and the senior residents is an amazing feeling as a teacher,” said Interact Club co-advisor Miriam Skrivanek. “The way our students carry themselves and show caring and compassion for others is truly amazing to watch.”
