Planned Parenthood Endorses Harckham for State Senate Re-Election

New York State Senator Pete Harckham announced today that he has received an endorsement from Planned Parenthood Empires State Votes (PPESV) PAC for re-election to the New York State Senate. The endorsement of Harckham was conveyed in a letter from the Planned Parenthood Empires State Votes (PPESV) PAC Endorsement Committee.

Now finishing his second term as a state senator, Harckham cosponsored and helped pass the Reproductive Health Act in New York on January 22, 2019, the 46th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade ruling. Earlier this year, Harckham co-sponsored and helped pass two separate bills that will protect the rights of women traveling to New York for reproductive health care.

“Because of the rightwing-led Supreme Court’s wrongful decision to overturn the precedent set by Roe v. Wade, and strip rights away from women for the first time in our nation’s history, New York State must be a leader and stand with women to protect their right to reproductive healthcare,” said Harckham. “I have fought for these rights, and will continue to do so. I am grateful for Planned Parenthood’s partnership, and recognition of my work in this regard. Today, tomorrow and forever, we must ensure that women receive the health care they choose and deserve.”

Harckham also championed the state’s new Equal Rights Amendment prohibiting discrimination by the government based on a person’s ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, and sex — including their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes.

The endorsement letter to Harckham from the PPESV PAC Endorsement Committee states, “This year we have seen several states interfere with and in some cases completely disrupt the right to bodily autonomy. It has also been made clear that we can no longer count on the Supreme Court to uphold our constitutional right to abortion, which is essential health care. At a time when our health, rights, and freedoms are being relentlessly attacked around the country, we need state leaders who will advance bold policies and actions to further New York’s legacy as a leader in protecting and expanding access to comprehensive reproductive and sexual health care. We believe you will be one of those leaders in office.”

Harckham is campaigning to return to Albany and continue representing the 40th Senate District. Election Day is Tuesday, November 8.
