BHS Team Takes First at Siena College Programming Contest
Seniors Daniel Deng, Ben Harris, Josh Kupka & Andrew Van Camp finished first among the 29 teams in first-time competitors 'green division'
The first-ever Briarcliff High School computer programming team traveled north to Siena College on Friday, March 29th to compete in the 32nd Annual High School Programming Contest – and won. Seniors Daniel Deng, Ben Harris, Josh Kupka and Andrew Van Camp finished first among the twenty-nine teams in the green division for first-time competitors.
Teams were given seven programming problems to solve in three hours and fifteen minutes. The Briarcliff team completed six of the seven problems in the allotted time. One other school also finished six of the problems. The tiebreaker went to Briarcliff because they used less time to complete the problems.
JP Fasano, Briarcliff High School Math & Computer Science Teacher, explained, "The boys registered for the event on their own, met outside of school to do practice problems and arranged their own transportation with Andrew’s father doing the driving. This is a very motivated group of students. When they are assigned five coding homework problems, this group will frequently do twenty-five problems. This is a great group of students that drive each other to achieve more and have lots of fun doing it."
