Grown and sun-dried on the Farm

Try organic, herbal teas from Little Seed Gardens

Market Lead Sponsor Phelps Memorial Hospital Center will visit Saturday, highlighting their rich history of outreach and involvement in the local community. Located in Sleepy Hollow, NY, just 4.5 miles from the Pleasantville Farmers Market, Phelps generously supports the Market’s chefs demos, Let’s Talk Events, and our mission to connect area residents with healthy choices. Learn about Phelps Memorial Hospital Center by clicking here, and stop by on Saturday to speak with their representatives at the Market.

Phelps Health Tip:
“Benefits of organics reaffirmed! Researchers in a United Kingdom study found that organic produce contains more antioxidants compared to conventional produce. The 18 - 69% higher levels are due to pesticide-free plants having to mount an antioxidant defense to protect themselves against peak attacks and injuries”. Note: the Market has three growers who are Certified Organic.

Who’s in this week?
Rotation Vendors are specifically listed in the left column of this newsletter. Look to our Map of the Market to see all vendors in this Saturday.

Great Time to Support a Farm
Support of your favorite indoor vendor is sure to have an impact on your favorite summer vendor -they are likely the same farm. Farms and farmers are around all year of course. Make a difference and a delicious, good time by shopping at the Market this month.

Enjoy Herbal Teas From Little Seed Gardens
Claudia Kenny of Little Seed Gardens is on to something. Over the last two seasons she has been experimenting with organic herbal teas. Grown and sun-dried on her farm, she has three you can try: Orange Mint Tea (a variety of mint with a bright “citrusy” flavor), Ginger Mint Tea (gentle ginger and mint flavor) and Lemon Verbana Tea (rich green tea flavor, nice lemon aroma).

Way to go Mr. Trotta!
Trotta Foods has been shopping in the Market again to cook up another unique, fresh ravioli. Using ingredients from the Market they have perfected a new Beet & Goat Cheese ravioli. Ed Trotta’s son Gus is in each week to help shoppers fulfill their quest for a great pasta --looks like Gus has another great option to offer. Try the Beet & Goat Cheese ravioli with a little butter and tarragon, or with the Trotta’s Alfredo sauce.

Speaking of Beets
Our farms still have beets for a few more weeks. If beets haven’t been your thing, warm to them, and warm the kitchen, by roasting some. Also Healing Home Foods has been working with beets to create their Beet Sweet Crackers. They will be in this Saturday with those and many other raw foods treats.

Looking For New Flavors?
Spice Revolution will be featuring the following spices this week: Aleppo, Vadouvan, Zesty Italian, Jerk mix, Organic cumin seed, Chili powder (medium heat, salt free), Adobo (salt free), Herbs de Provence, Organic Turmeric, Sweet smoked Spanish Paprika, Hungarian sweet paprika, Toasted sliced onions, Lemongrass, Lavender, Organic Saigon cinnamon, Fennel pollen, Garam masala and Za’atar.

HOT Roti to stay, or go
In addition to flavorful chutneys, Bombay Emerald Chutney Company brings prepared foods such as homemade vegetarian roti rolls. Tried one yet? They’re an Indian whole wheat bread with seasonal veggies inside. Enjoy one warmed up at the Market or take it to go.

25% OFF One of Conant’s Most Popular Preserves
This Saturday, Conant Valley Jams will be offering 25% OFF it’s popular Spicy Apple Cider Jelly. Made from apple cider from fellow vendor Breezy Hill Orchards & Cider Mill, this great jelly is the perfect antidote for chilly mornings with its great apple taste, spicy and alive with flavor. At regular price, they’ll also be offering their first Blood Orange/Key Lime Marmalade (super tart and citrusy) and a rare winter batch of Plum/Pinot Noir Jam. They will also have seven other hand-made flavors.

Spoonful is Back
This winter gluten-free vendor Spoonful of Sugar visits on the 3rd Saturday of each month. That makes this week the right one to get a Spoonful of delicious sweet and savory items, all baked in a dedicated, gluten-free kitchen.

Comforting, One-Pot Dish from Pickle Licious
Pickle Licious is highlighting a recipe this week with a fight the cold, stick-to-your-ribs appeal. Its use of one pot is pretty appealing too. Pickle Licious produces a fresh sauerkraut, which is a key ingredient, and if they sell out, Stefan’s Pure Blends also produces a fresh sauerkraut too. The recipe calls for sweet Italian turkey sausage, so we called Tony Campanelli of Campanelli’s Poultry Farm to get a sausage report. He states they’re making fresh, sweet Italian chicken sausage this week (which can be used with this recipe in place of the turkey sausage), and next week he’ll have three types of fresh turkey sausage: sweet, hot, and Mexican chorizo. Lastly, the Market offers lots of options for the red potatoes called for in the recipe. To read through the recipe click here.
