Whatever The Weather, Pleasantville Shines!

Pleasantville Farmers Market is open Saturdays, 8:30am - 1:00pm

With rain nearly every Saturday this fall it started to look like a pie in the sky idea to hold our Apple Pie Contest this year. But last week our incredible team of volunteers got a protected version of the Contest in apple pie order, and our judges were as nice as pie about participating whatever the weather, and no matter how you slice it our local bakers (record turnout, btw) were GUTSY -- each baking their best despite a threatening forecast.

Any event can be a magnifier of individual qualities and community spirit. We're proud our weekly market enables home cooks to mingle while shopping for their weekly needs and to celebrate one another on event days like the Contest. We appreciate last week that our panel of food writers, Village luminaries, and local chefs & culinary professionals provided their time and insights so all baked entries could be evaluated in the most professional manner. Our wonderful farmers and food artisans donated generously to the Contest’s nine prize bags. And our terrific high school student and adult volunteers worked in teams so the Contest could be run effectively and also be a lot of FUN. The event magnified everyone's support of one another, and showcased our community's passion for sharing culinary accomplishments.

THANKS AGAIN to everyone who participated in last week's market and Contest -- as a baker, or as one seeking a slice of pie, or as one shopping for the week's needs (or all three). Your support of our producers through week after week of challenging weather is a BIG deal. You take the cake (pie actually) as an inspiring community we love being a part of, and love serving.

VENDOR HIGHLIGHTS

Orwasher's Bakery has their Pumpkin Bread this week! Soft and just slightly sweet with hints of ginger and pie spice, this loaf is a fall favorite. Try it toasted with a slather of butter, or make some incredible pumpkin French toast on a cool October morning.

(Turkey Sign-up Underway) Saturday Hilly Acres Farm will have a full assortment of pork, beef, chicken, fresh brown eggs, and a great selection of pork and beef roasts. They're also now taking preorders for turkeys for Thanksgiving. Turkeys (broad breasted whites) will range 13-20 pounds. Hill Acres raises a limited number of turkeys so it's first sign-up, first served. Stop by their tent for details.

Trotta Foods has a (wonderful) pumpkin thing going on. Seek them out for pumpkin ravioli, pumpkin tortellini, and pumpkin vodka sauce!

Bombay Chutney Company encourages shoppers to enjoy Indian style authentic meals like Kofta, Saag, Rajma, Dal Tadka and Chana Masala. All hearty and great with rice.

Spirits Lab will be in for their October visit this Saturday!

Teagevity is ready to serve shoppers in our cooler fall markets, with their grab and go option "Tea2go" in Hibiscus Pineapple, Blood Orange & Hibiscus, Strawberry Fields, Raspberry Summer Lemon & Green Tea & Lemongrass. Also, they've started their line of special fall hot teas, served by the cup: Preston's Pumpkin Chai, Dirty Chai, and Apple Cider Ginger tea with Cinnamon.

Kriemhild Dairy Farms will be at the Market Saturday with their full line of Certified Organic, grassfed butter and milk. Due to an overwhelmingly positive reception to samples last month, going forward Kriemhild Chocolate Milk is now Kriemhild Real Buttermilk with Chocolate.

Noble Pies is highlighting that their Hudson Valley Apple pie is at peak flavor right now, made with a delicious variety of apples.

Mead Orchards and Wright's Farm are at peak apple time! Stop by and gather what you need for your week's meals.

Little Seed Gardens (in addition to highlighting their ginger harvest!) is giving a shout out to fall squash. Shoppers can now expect to see fall favorites such as Butternut, Honeynut (smaller version of Butternut with a rich, sweet, nutty flavor), Autumn Frost (specialty Butternut, creamy and mild), Delicata (a Little Seed favorite, super sweet, caramelizes nicely when baked, great sauteed), and Acorn squash (more mild and savory than Butternuts).

Watch Bien Cuit in the fall as they introduce several seasonal pastries including Apple Cardamom Danish, Butternut Squash Harrisa Danish, and Red Miso Pan au Raisin.

Whitecliff Vineyard takes pride in winning lots of medals on their wines, and this weekend they'll be focusing on recent winners in their wine selection including: Dry Rosé (Gold, The Rosé Competition), Dry Riesling (Gold, Atlantic Seaboard Competition), Cabernet Franc (Silver, Eastern International Wine Competition), and Merlot Malbec (Gold, New York Wine Classic).

EVENTS AT THE MARKET

Music Series Performance: (weather permitting)
10:30am - 12:30pm
This Saturday does not appear ready to give us a dry enough day for award winning songwriter Mike Burns (co-founder of the Westchster Bluegrass Club) to join us for a performance. If things take a turn for the better, we'll surprise everyone by presenting Mike's vocals and guitar in original works and some old country blues numbers. If not, seek him out at the Westchester Bluegrass Club! Our Music Series performances are made possible in 2023 thanks to generous support from our Sponsor the Jacob Burns Film Center.
