2010 Census: Hispanic Population Almost Doubles in Port Jeff Station, While Asians Also Make a Big Jump
The latest data released by the U.S. Government from the 2010 Census shows that the fastest growing population in Port Jefferson Station is Hispanic followed by Asian.

The Hispanic population in Port Jefferson Station grew 41 percent between 2000 and 2010 according to a comparison of the census data just released by the U.S. Government.
In the 2000 Census 685 people identified themselves as Hispanic. In the 2010 Census that number grew to 1,158. Neighboring Port Jefferson village saw a slight increase in its Hispanic population. From 2000 to 2010 the number of people who identified themselves as Hispanic went up by 92, an increase of 18 percent. In Selden, the Hispanic population jumped as well, going up by 35 percent.
The Asian population went up by 33 percent in Port Jefferson Station, going from 283 individuals in 2000 to 420 in 2010, an increase of 137. In Selden by comparison those identifying themselves as Asian went up from 535 in 2000 to 866 in the latest census, increasing by 331 or 38 percent. In Port Jefferson village the number of people who identified themselves as Asian was 261 in 2000 but that number jumped by 44% in 2010 to 470.

The total population in Port Jefferson Station stayed about the same only increasing by 311 people, from 7,527 in 2000 to 7,838 in 2010. The population of Whites barely budged in the latest data increasing by only 24 people. The population identifying itself as Black or African American also saw little movement, increasing by 14 percent. That number went from 168 people in 2000 to 195 in 2010, adding just 27 individuals.
The number of people who identify with two or more races went up as well. In 2000 that number was at 136 people and in 2010 it was at 181, increasing 25 percent.
