80 Year Old Business Goes Up In Flames.

Malkmes Florist a well-known neighborhood business located at 70 Oakland Ave destroyed by early morning fire.

A well known Port Jefferson Station establishment destroyed during an early morning fire. At approximately 6:30am Suffolk County Police & Terryville Fire Department received multiple calls for heavy smoke in the area of Route 112. Upon further investigation, Terryville Fire Department 2nd Assistant Chief Thomas Young discovered the local florist located at 70 Oakland Ave off Route 112 was fully involved in fire. According to sources, Malkmes Florist has operated in Port Jefferson Station for 80 years. Assistance from neighboring fire departments were called in due to the heavy volume of fire. Port Jefferson Fire Department, Selden Fire Department and Mount Sinai Fire Department all responded to assist in battling the blaze. Firefighters used ladder trucks to fight the fire from above and hose lines on the ground. Motorists traveling in the area said they could see heavy dark smoke from a distance. A Mount Sinai resident said he saw heavy smoke as he left his residence on Mount Sinai Ave. The fire was fully extinguished at approximately 8:30am. Terryville EMS crews provided aid at the scene as a precaution. Coram Fire Department sent 1 pumper to cover Terryville Fire Department for the duration of the incident. No injuries to any firefighters or civilians were reported. The fire is currently under investigation.
