Census 2010: Port Jefferson Village Sees Dramatic Increase in Asian Population

Data released by the U.S. Government from the 2010 Census shows Hispanic population on the rise as well.

The number of people identifying themselves as Asian living in Port Jefferson village increased by 44 percent to 470 in 2010, that's compared to 261 in 2000, according to the U.S. Census data released this week.

Next door in Setauket-East Setauket, the number of people listing themselves as Asian decreased from 1,398 in 2000 to 1,137 in 2010, while Port Jefferson Station saw its population of Asians go up from 283 individuals in 2000 to 420 in 2010, a 33 percent increase. Mount Sinai had 130 Asians listed in the 2000 Census. That number increased to 486 in 2010, a 374 percent jump.

The Hispanic population increased by 18 percent to 500 people compared to 408 in 2000. Surrounding areas also saw an increase in the population of Hispanics, most notably, Port Jefferson Station where the population of that group went up 41 percent between 2000 and 2010. The number of Hispanics also increased in Setauket-East Setauket from 546 to 807 individuals, a 32 percent jump.

Those identifying themselves as American Indian or Alaska Native increased from 3 people in 2000 to 7 in 2010 in Port Jefferson village.

The total population in the village went down by 87 people from 7,837 in 2000 to 7,750 in 2010. Whites decreased in number by 394 people from a total of 6,950 in 2000 to 6,556 in 2010. Those indentifying themselves as Blacks or African American decreased as well in that time dropping from 126 to 117.

The number of people who identified with two or more races went up for the village, increasing from 63 in 2000 to 87 in 2010. In Port Jefferson Station 136 people said they identified with two of more races and in 2010 it increased to 181.
