Fishing Report: Porgies, Bass and the Big Blues
Get ready for the bluefishing tournament this weekend.
Water temperatures in central Long Island Sound remain in the range of 73 degrees according to Weather Underground.
Local fisherman Eric Huner caught a plethora of fish over the last two weeks launching out of Port Jefferson harbor, no doubt getting ready for the upcoming bluefishing tournament this coming weekend. (More about that later.)
He hauled in four striped bass (23, 22, 16 and 13 lbs.) and more than 10 big blues in the 8 to 13 pounder ranger. Not enough to beat the big blue he caught in last year’s tourney. That one weighed in at 15.94 lbs.

Huner’s friend Al Pesce was on the boat that day and reeled in the 22 lb. Bass that measured 38 inches.
Last Wednesday he fished out of Port Jefferson mid afternoon and reported a “decent day of fishing.”

He caught 15 blues all up to 13 pounds and four bass (13, 17, 22, and 23lbs.)
This past weekend, Huner went out again with his son, Alec and caught four bass, two of which were keepers weighing in at 23 and 17 lbs.
“Caught ten big blues as well,” he reported.
Don’t forget the scup (porgy).
Candy Caraftis has been saying for weeks that the porgies are out by Old Field. Here, fishenmission is saying the same thing.
“Amazing the size of the Porgies we caught this morning, just off Old Field,” he reported on noreast.com on Aug. 20 for his charter boat.
Caraftis suggests chumming for porgies to help get them going. You know you’re over a school of porgy when you drop your line down and you immediately feel that rat-tat-tat on the line.
Remember that the big blue fishing tournament is this weekend. (Yes, it did sneak up on you and yes the summer is going way too fast.) There’s $25,000 at stake. That’s why they call it the Greatest Bluefish Tournament on Earth. Remember to register. The fee is $42 per fisherman and you can sign up at or online.
