Comsewogue Students Get a Leg-Up About Long Island’s Growth Careers

Never too Young to Connect Students to Growing Companies and Jobs on Long Island

Port Jefferson Station, NY; March 3, 2017–Have you ever had a table in the gymnasium or cafeteria of a high school for a Career Day? Did students visit your exhibit table and take some of your promotional items? Well, this Career Day is not like that!!!

On March 3, 60, 9th graders at Comsewogue High School will participate in Comsewogue’s Growth Careers Day. They will experience interactive, smaller group discussions from business leaders and representatives from 5 growth industries here on Long Island--Advanced Manufacturing, Green Industries, Healthcare, Information Technology (IT), and Life Sciences (Pharmacutical, Biological /Chemical Technology) (according to the Long Island Regional Economic Council).

“How many students while in high school know about the opportunities that exist for their future career right here on Long Island? Too many students leave Long Island and get degrees they can’t use or loans they can’t pay back!” Growing up in Uniondale, and graduating 45 years ago, Lisa Strahs-Lorenc, like many of her peers, got a degree she couldn’t use because there were no jobs, and eventually returned to Long Island to be with family. She became a career counselor so that other students wouldn’t experience what she went through in finding and securing a career. She is currently the Director of CEO Works, a school business partnership program of Career & Employment Options, and has worked connecting business and education for over 20 years. She knows how important it is to make these connections early.

Comsewogue School District, her previous residential district, one of the few Middle States accredited institutions on Long Island that is open to independent learning and non-traditional educational learning styles that embraced this career day, by selecting a group of project-based learners combined with students from learning centers. CEO ensures that there is data With pre and post-assessments, and a follow-up project, these students from different learning abilities will have the privilege to meet with business owners and representatives from the following companies; Buncee, LLC; Chiropractic Solutions Chiropractor & Wellness Consultant; Clean Energy Options, LLC; Comsewogue High School; Digital Onesource Consulting Solutions; Direct Energy Solar; Echo Pharmacy & Surgical Supplies; Festo; Luitpold Pharmaceutical; McDonald's; Parker Aerospace; Paul Cataldo, Architecture and Planning; PSEG; Right at Home In Home Care & Assistance Heatlhcare; Server Bays, LLC; St. Charles Hospital; Sierra Club; The Good Life. Each of these companies understands the value of educating future employees and our Long Island students about his/her industry, company, position and opportunities.

Nicholas Villani, President of CEO (Career & Employment Options), founded in 2005 to deliver transitional and vocational services to special needs students and adults, states that CEO Works, “is a program that we believe will reshape how schools and businesses view their respective places in the role of education on Long Island. Through its efforts to enable businesses to directly influence the way schools and students view businesses and for businesses to get a direct voice of the education field, will be groundbreaking. Through this dialogue, CEO Works intends to transform the relationship for all students and their connection to their local business communities as potentials for career and economic growth“

Joseph Coniglione, Comsewogue High School Principal, states, “This is a wonderful opportunity for our students. Partnering with local businesses gives the students an opportunity to grow as learners and plan for their future.”

This will be the first of many events and programs that educate students about Long Island’s career opportunities, and continued outreach to progressive business leaders who understand that their investment is in Long Island’s students, no matter what their learning level and abilities. The intended results—greater connections between their future workforce and our students through shadow days, internships and jobs. Their investment of time and outreach makes good business cents (sense).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CEO Works is invested in high school students of all learning abilities. What does their future look like? They are growing up on Long Island at a unique time. New careers and skills are needed in this 21st century, and Long Island needs to connect to its future employees. Our students need to learn about the relevance of their education. They need to understand and see opportunities in the “real world” that will help with their decisions after they leave high school. Students who are offered more “real life” connections are more motivated while they are in school and more successful afterwards. Our Long Island companies need to connect to these students. They are our investment and success of our business growth and future.
